Why is this a retreat and not a tour?
Most birding trips are built like a job. Up at four, on the bus, hit the site, count, repeat. Nine days later you go home with a big list and a body that needs a vacation from the vacation.
This one is built differently.
Mornings are for birding, and we bird hard, because the birds do not wait for us. Afternoons are yours. There is a hammock overlooking the forest, a pool, coffee, and a garden full of tanagers. Day six has personal reflection time written into the schedule on purpose.
Over nine days you will move through four completely different worlds: Pacific coastline, mangrove rivers at dusk, cloud forest that sits inside an actual cloud, and a highland ranch where a hundred species before lunch is a normal morning. Somewhere in there, a male Resplendent Quetzal will drop off a branch with two feet of green fire trailing behind him, and your whole group will go quiet at the same time.
But here is what people tell me six months later, and it is almost never the Quetzal.
They tell me about the third morning, when they realized they had not looked at their phone since breakfast and had not missed it. About lying in a hammock at two in the afternoon feeling faintly guilty about resting, and then getting over it. About being fifty-eight years old, standing in front of a bird they had never heard of, and feeling exactly the way they felt at eight.
You come home sleeping properly. You come home a sharper birder, because when everything is unfamiliar you cannot coast on recognition, and those muscles travel back with you. Your home patch is never quite as boring again.
Come for the birds. Stay for the reset.
